Solar Panel Calculator for Power Stations

How long does it take to recharge your power station with solar, and how many watts of panels do you need? Uses real sun hours for your state.

How solar recharge time is calculated

A solar panel's rating (e.g. 200 W) is measured in lab conditions. In the real world you'll get about 70–80% because of heat, angle, dust and controller losses. We use 75%. The number of hours of strong sunlight (“peak sun hours”) depends on where you are.

Recharge time (sun hours) = Capacity (Wh) ÷ (Panel W × 0.75)

Remember the station's maximum solar input: connecting 800 W of panels to a unit that accepts 220 W won't charge it faster.

Recharge time by power station and panel size

Hours of full sun from 0 to 100%. * = limited by the station's maximum solar input.

Peak sun hours by state

StatePeak sun hours/dayDaily output of a 200 W panel
Arizona6.5≈ 975 Wh
Nevada6.2≈ 930 Wh
California5.8≈ 870 Wh
Texas5.3≈ 795 Wh
Florida5.2≈ 780 Wh
Colorado5.5≈ 825 Wh
Georgia4.9≈ 735 Wh
North Carolina4.8≈ 720 Wh
Illinois4.4≈ 660 Wh
New York4≈ 600 Wh
Michigan4≈ 600 Wh
Washington3.6≈ 540 Wh

Annual averages. Expect 30–50% more in summer and 40–60% less in winter, especially in northern states.

Tips for faster solar charging

  • Angle panels toward the sun and re-aim them 2–3 times a day: up to 30% more energy than lying flat.
  • Keep panels cool and shade-free; even a small shadow can cut output dramatically.
  • Check the connector (XT60, Anderson, DC7909, DC8020) and the open-circuit voltage before buying third-party panels.
  • Use two inputs if your station supports it (e.g. solar + car charging).

Frequently asked questions

How many solar panels do I need to charge a 1000Wh power station?

With 5 peak sun hours you need about 270 W of panels to recharge 1,000 Wh in one day (1,000 ÷ (5 × 0.75)). A 200 W panel takes about 6.7 hours of full sun, a 400 W panel about 3.3 hours if the station accepts 400 W.

Can a 100W solar panel charge a power station?

Yes, but slowly: about 75 W real output, so a 300 Wh unit takes ~4 hours of full sun and a 1,000 Wh unit more than 13 hours (2–3 days).

Can I use any brand of solar panel?

Usually yes, if the voltage is within the station's solar input range and you have the right adapter. Same-brand panels are plug-and-play.

Do solar panels work on cloudy days?

They still produce, but typically only 10–25% of their rating under heavy clouds.
