How Long Will a Power Station Run a Well Pump?

Well pumps draw about 1,000 W on average (1,000 W running, 3,000 W start-up). A 1,000 Wh power station runs one for about 51 min. See every popular model below, or calculate with your exact device.

Runtime by power station

Before you start: Check your pump's nameplate first: most deep-well submersible pumps run on 240 V. Standard portable power stations only supply 120 V; of the models below, the Anker SOLIX F3800 Plus has native 240 V output, while others need extra accessories or two linked units. Have an electrician connect it through a transfer switch.

How we calculate it

Runtime = capacity (Wh) × 0.85 ÷ 1,000 W

For a day of water (about 2 hours of pumping) you need about 2,360 Wh (2,000 Wh of energy plus inverter losses). Running other devices at the same time? Add them in the runtime calculator.

Tips to run your well pump longer

  • The start-up surge is the hard part: a 1/2 HP pump can briefly draw 3,000 W or more. If the station trips at start-up, it is undersized for your pump.
  • A well pump runs only when the pressure tank refills, often 1–3 hours per day in total. Save water to reduce pump cycles.
  • Fill buckets and bathtubs before a forecast storm so you only need to run the pump occasionally.

Frequently asked questions

How long will a 1000Wh power station run a well pump?

About 51 min, based on an average draw of 1,000 W and 85% inverter efficiency.

How many watts does a well pump use?

Typically about 1,000 W while running and up to 3,000 W for a moment at start-up. Averaged over time it draws about 1,000 W.

What size power station do I need for a day of water (about 2 hours of pumping)?

At least 2,360 Wh. The smallest model in our comparison that covers it is the EcoFlow DELTA Pro (3,600 Wh, about 3.1 h).
